Short Vowel Word Family Cards

With the finish of our Color the Chunk Word Family Pages and the start of Learn to Read with my Kindergartner, I have word families on the brain!

So I thought this would be the perfect time to create some short vowel word family cards for her to use as a spelling or reading reference. And I’m sharing them with you, too!

The 30 short vowel word families included are:

  • Short a: -at, -ad, -an, -am, -ap, -ag & -ack
  • Short e: -et, -ed, -en, -eck, -est, & -ell
  • Short i: -it, -ig, -ip, -in, -ick, & -ill
  • Short o: -ot, -og, -op, -ob, & -ock
  • Short u: -ug, -ut, -un, -ub, -uck, & -ump

(These don’t include all of the welded sounds, like -ing, -ank, or -all. But we do have free welded sound phonics cards.)

On each card, the word family is featured up at the top. Then there are 6 common words and pictures that fit within that word family. Some cards do not have blends and digraphs at the beginning and some do. The onset (beginning part) of the words are black and the rime (word family pattern) is red to help readers SEE the chunk in the word.

make a flip book with the short vowel word family cards

You can keep the cards separate, but I HIGHLY suggest using a heavy duty hole punch and a clip ring to create a flip book. This keeps them altogether and makes it easy to hang them up on a hook. It also makes them more portable. So if my daughter needs to use them in the kitchen, she can.

If you want to make them more durable, I also suggest laminating them.

Learners can read each word on the card. Grab our free beginning sounds chart to help learners think of even more words they can spell from the word family rime.

Because the images are smaller, these work best for individual learners or small groups.

**Got a preschooler? Use these simple cards to practice rhyming words!!

If you’re looking for cards that could be put on your wall and seen across the room, you might like our MEGA Bundle Pack of Phonics Cards. It includes word family rime cards, welded sound cards, and hundreds more!!
